Discover Odour Eliminating Laundry Detergent

There’s nothing more frustrating than strong pungent odours that won’t get out of your clothes. Your best fabric conditioner can only mask the smell temporarily and your clothes will still smell unclean. There are several factors that may affect the smell of your laundry – you could be using the wrong detergent, overloading your washing machine, or drying your clothes improperly.

The bacteria on your skin is responsible for causing the odour on your clothes. They breed and multiply in moist environments, which is why your clothes tend to be more stinky when you sweat excessively. Other smells that commonly linger in clothing items include pet odours, chemicals, grease, oil, and more. The first step to getting unpleasant odours from your clothes is to get a laundry detergent with odour busting properties.

When you’re choosing a laundry detergent to deal with odours from your clothes, you need to consider formulas that effectively combat the smells instead of just covering them temporarily. Detergents that are specifically formulated to banish odours should contain ingredients that eliminate odour-causing components such as bacteria, oil, and grime.

Common detergent misuses that trigger unpleasant laundry odours

  • Using too much detergent

  • Your washing machine may not completely rinse away excess detergent, so they can remain trapped in the fabric and cause mould growth. Always stick to the recommended dose instructions on the package to make the best use of your detergent.

  • Using a detergent that doesn’t suit the fabric material

If you’re struggling to get the smell out of your workout clothes, your current detergent is probably not specifically formulated for synthetic fabrics. Activewear is typically made of modern synthetic fabrics to wick moisture off your body and keep you dry and comfortable. But because of that, the fabric of your workout clothes absorb oil, sweat, and bacteria more easily and trap these odour-causing agents inside the fibres.

DIY laundry odour-removing solutions

  • Baking soda

  • You can add baking soda to a wash, sprinkle them on your clothes if you can’t wash them right away, or combine it with a cup of borax or white vinegar.
  • White vinegar

  • Put white vinegar into the fabric softener and bleach dispenser of your washing machine and let it retrieve the fresh smell of new clothes on your laundry. Alternatively, you can add another cup of white vinegar to the final rinse to neutralise any odour in your clothing, remove any detergent residue, and soften your clothes fabric.

Simple hacks to prevent smelly clothes in the future

  • Avoid the laundry bag

  • If your clothes are starting to emanate unpleasant odours, you should turn them inside out and allow them to air out or wash them straight away. Keeping them inside a full laundry bag will only encourage bacteria growth and worsen the unwanted smell.

  • Air dry your clothes

  • Letting your clothes dry in open air and exposing them to consistent airflow is the most effective method to keep them fresh. Even though using a dryer machine seems more efficient, your clothes are stuck inside a hot moist pile that may generate musty smells instead.

  • Pre-soak your clothes

  • Soaking your clothes before a wash gives you a better chance of removing stains and odours. You can use pre-soak solutions from the store, simply mix water with baking soda, or use white vinegar.
