For wool or delicate items, be sure to use to a wool wash or detergent that is formulated for delicate washing.

Do you use too much or too little detergent? We tend to think the more detergent used, the better the clean on our laundry. To use the correct amount, this may depend on the size of your washing load as well as how heavily soiled the items are. Always follow the instructions on the packaging label for amount of detergent to be used.

Separating garments and items by colour/type

The last thing you want is to find that a brightly-coloured item has bled onto a white shirt! Make sure to separate your washing especially brightly-coloured garments from lights/whites. Furthermore, to get the most out of your wear, wash dark coloured clothing together, ideally turned inside out such as dark denim and t-shirts to prevent fading over time. Lastly, place delicate items such as underwear in a laundry bag to prevent snags and tears against other clothing.

Choose the right washing cycle and temperature

To help you select the right wash cycle for your garments and household linens, check and always follow the fabric care label. Cold water washes are great to prevent dark colours discolouration and having dye bleed into the water. This also is recommended for woollen items to prevent shrinkage. On the other hand, a hot cycle can be used for those with allergies or removing germs from linens such as bedding and towels.

Drying your laundry

There are a few options to drying your washing, whether it’s air dried on the line, shade, flat or tumble dried in various heat settings. Follow the fabric care labels specified on your garment especially if there are special instructions for delicate items.

While tumble dryers are handy especially in cold and wet weather, air drying will save you money and is more environmentally friendly. When possible line-drying outdoors is ideal, however in winter this becomes more difficult. Other indoors options to air dry include using a heated towel rail, clothing rack/airer or investing in a dehumidifier to draw out moisture in the air from indoor laundry drying.
