Mud stains on clothes can be quite frustrating. We all want our clothes to look good, but preserving them to the best of our ability can be a hardy task when you lead an active or outdoorsy lifestyle. Luckily, there are a few ways you can get mud and grime stains out of clothes, and it doesn’t have to cost you the earth.

How to remove mud from your garments

Get set, scrub!

Contrary to most other stain removal methods, an initial mud stain treatment is best done when the mud is dry. Soaking the stain will cause the mud to travel deeper into the fibres of your clothes, further ingraining itself into the garment. Start by gently shaking or scraping off any dried excess dirt from the garment. This can be done with a knife or spoon but you want to take care not to apply unnecessary pressure when scraping, to avoid setting the stain further.

Next, you want to saturate the stain with a liquid laundry detergent. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush and let the detergent sit for a few minutes before laundering according to the garment’s care instructions. It is very important that you use warm water when washing with these products as hot water can set in the stain and make it harder to remove later on! After washing, rewash with cold water to ensure all traces are gone.  Why not try Biozet Attack PLUS Stain Power, this powerful detergent attacks difficult stains fast even in tough conditions.

Dirty denim; how to remove mud stains from jeans

When dealing with muddy denims, the process is very similar. You can wash mud off jeans with a traditional washing powder or detergent, but you should definitely avoid harsh chemicals.

The first step is to get the mud off your jeans as soon as possible. The longer it sits on the fabric, the more likely it will cause permanent damage. A gentle scrub with a dry soft brush should help dislodge all the dried dirt before adding any water into the mix. If there’s just a little bit of mud on your jeans, you can use a stain-targeting detergent directly on the stain and rub it in with your fingers – you may want to protect your hands with some gloves.

If there’s more than just a little bit, you’ll need a sponge or brush with some muscle behind it. Once most of the mud has been removed from your jeans, rinse them in cold water several times until all traces of dirt are gone. A gentle launder on the appropriate cycle should eliminate any remaining mud but if not, simply repeat the process.

Soiled soles; removing mud stains from white shoes

There’s nothing worse than spotting a mud mark on a pair of fresh white sneakers. But fret not, the solution is simple. Just fill a bowl or bucket with some warm water and your detergent of choice. A soft scrub with a sponge or brush should get those pesky stains right out.
